Tracking health and social assistance jobs in San Bernardino County
Which areas in SB County are building more jobs in this growing industry?
The Health and Social Assistance industry (NAICS code 62) is an important one for the Inland Empire for many reasons:
There is an increasing awareness about the importance of mental health among all age groups in recent years
Health and social services jobs are stable, high quality (e.g., they can provide flexible hours and often come with good benefits), and provide good middle- and high-income jobs to our residents
As our community populations age, there will be increased demand for health services
In areas like the Inland Empire where things are more spread out, health and social services jobs provide shorter commutes which are more equitable, especially for women
For all these reasons, it is vital to track which parts of the Inland Empire are growing these kinds of jobs. In this post, I examine the state of the health and social assistance labor market in San Bernardino County; if you’re interested in specific areas or other parts of the Inland Empire, or particular subsectors within this vibrant industry, feel free to let me know.
The number of establishments providing health and social services varies widely within the County. As of 2022, Rancho Cucamonga (zip 91730), Upland (91786), and Redlands (92373) had the highest number of such establishments in the County. Apple Valley in the High Desert also ranks high – # 6 – on this list. See the table below for the top 20 areas as well as a map of counts by zip code.
Mapping across the County:
I also present changes in estimated job counts by zip code (note: these are just estimates and are admittedly imperfect) between 2017 and 2022. Notably, estimated net job changes were negative in some of the highest-establishment areas, such as Redlands. Net job increases were highest in Ontario, northern San Bernardino, and parts of the High Desert. This suggests a slight shift in where these jobs are located.
